Top 5 hikes on Bornholm
Bornholm offers hikers of all levels a chance to immerse themselves in its natural beauty. Here are the top five hikes on Bornholm that promise unforgettable experiences:
Helligdomsklipperne (The Sanctuary Cliffs)
This well marked trail followes along the edge of the Baltic Sea. On my visit it was a rainy, cloudy day, which you can see in the second picture. The weather coditions weren’t great for climbing on the rocks, but I still went for it. Climbing is of course optional, but it offers the brave who dare a phenomenal view over the sea and the high rocky coast of Bornholm. The actual trail passes those cliffs, but if you are not afraid of heights, the trail offers several spots to approach the edge of the cliff to get a better view
Salomon's Chapel and Døndalen Gorge
On the hike through Døndalen, which translates to ‘The Thunder Valley‘ you walk along moss-covered rocks and through beautiful forests. You can find Denmark’s highest waterfall with a height of 65ft.
The wooden staircase on the third picture gives you the most beautiful view over the forest, the coastline and the Baltic sea. Definitely one of my favourite spots on the whole island.Hammershus to Opalsøen (The Hammer Trail)
The trail starts at Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest medieval fortress ruins. On the hike you get to see multiple facettes of Bornholm’s nature
The trail ends at Opalsøen (The Opal Lake), a calm lake that got his name from its turquoise color. The first picture above is taken from the top of the cliffs that surround half of the lake, where you might even get the chance to ride the zip line, right into the sea.
If you are not a fan of hiking though, you can visit Hammershus and Opal Lake by driving there as well, since both spots offer paking lots.Langebjerg and the Almindingen Forest
Almindingen Forest is Denmark's third-largest forest. You start at Langebjerg, the island's highest point, and follow the marked trails as they wind through towering trees, along calm lakes, and castle ruins.
You are even allowed to camp in the forest for free, as long as you stick to the rules.Rundkirkerne (The Round Churches) Trail
You start your hike at Østerlars Church, the largest and oldest of the four round churches, and make your way to the remaining three churches in Nylars, Olsker, and Svaneke. You pass through villages and the countryside as the trail takes you to one church after another.
For those who enjoy sea food, restaurants in the fishing villages offer very fresh and local dishes with fish and seafood in different variations, which I can definitely recommend. You are likely to find a so called ‘røgeri’ in the villages, a smokehouse offering sfmoked fish, a local specialty for which Bornholm is famous.
