The most sustainable city in Europe

For over ten years, Copenhagen has been pursuing the goal of becoming climate-neutral in 2025.
It is frequently hailed as one of the world’s most sustainable cities and has made significant strides in environmental sustainability, urban planning, and green living. But what exactly makes Copenhagen so sustainable?

Green Urban Planning

Copenhagen’s urban planning emphasizes sustainability at every level. The city is designed to be compact and efficient, with mixed-use neighborhoods that reduce the need for long commutes. Public spaces are abundant, with green parks, waterfront areas, and pedestrian zones encouraging outdoor activities and social interaction. Not to mention the 546 kilometers/340 miles bicycle paths, we’re gonna get to that. 😉
The city also prioritizes the preservation of natural landscapes and the integration of green roofs and walls in urban areas. This thoughtful urban design ensures that residents have easy access to amenities, reducing reliance on cars and promoting a walkable city.

Renewable Energy

Copenhagen is a leader in renewable energy, with the ambitious goal to become carbon-neutral by 2025.
The city sources a significant portion of its energy from wind power, thanks to Denmark’s extensive offshore wind farms. Additionally, the city’s district heating system, which supplies heat to most of Copenhagen’s buildings, is fueled by biomass, waste-to-energy plants, and other renewable sources. This commitment to clean energy drastically reduces the city’s carbon footprint.

Bicycle-capital

Copenhagen is renowned for its bicycle culture. It’s the world’s most bicycle-friendly capital where nearly half of all commuting is done by bicycle.
This extensive network not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes a healthy lifestyle among residents. The city’s commitment to cycling is evident in its investments in cyclist-friendly infrastructure, such as the iconic Cykelslangen bridge (see: picture left), which elegantly winds its way through the urban landscape.

Public Transport

Public transportation in Copenhagen is efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly. The city boasts an extensive network of buses, trains, and metro lines that run on electricity, much of which is generated from renewable sources. The integration of these transport modes makes it easy for residents and visitors to navigate the city without relying on private cars, further reducing emissions and congestion.

Copenhagen embraces the 15-minute city concept, ensuring that all essential services and amenities are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from residents' homes. This approach encourages people not to use their cars, since there’s simply no need for it. By reducing long commutes and fostering self-sufficient neighborhoods, people get a high quality of life, where everything from schools and healthcare to parks and shops is easily accessible.

Green Buildings

The city’s commitment to sustainability extends to its architecture. Copenhagen has a growing number of green buildings designed to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact. Features such as green roofs, energy-efficient windows, and advanced insulation are commonplace. New developments must adhere to strict environmental standards, ensuring that the city’s building stock becomes increasingly sustainable over time.

Innovative Waste Management

Copenhagen has implemented cutting-edge waste management practices that prioritize recycling and waste-to-energy conversion. Amager Bakke is a prime example, transforming waste into energy while doubling as a recreational facility with a ski slope on its roof. This innovative approach not only reduces landfill use but also generates renewable energy for the city. Also it makes a perfect destination for ski-enthusiasts. Even families can have a good day, enjoy the view from the top, drinking a coffe at the bar or going downhill. Not only can you ski down the slope, but you can also slide down in a rubber tire for a unique experience for kids and adults alike. This multi-purpose facility combines waste-to-energy innovation with recreational activities, offering fun for everyone.

Innovation

Copenhagen is a hub for green innovation and technology. The city supports startups and research institutions focused on sustainable solutions, from smart grid technology to electric mobility.

This focus on innovation ensures that Copenhagen remains at the forefront of sustainability, continually finding new ways to enhance its green credentials.
